On 3 February, we will visit the flock of sheep in Froidevaux JU under the leadership of Daniel. Daniel has been herding this flock himself from 2019-2022 during the winter months from November to March. He will tell us about his varied experiences as a shepherd and career changer, travelling through the Jura heights and valleys with a herd of 400 sheep, donkeys and dogs. We will spend about an hour with the herd. Sheep are generally rather shy animals. When we meet the herd, we therefore try to observe them. There may be occasional contact between sheep and humans, as sheep are also curious. However, we try to leave the flock as undisturbed as possible during their natural feeding behaviour. If the flock gets restless, this is not a bad thing, but it is a sign for us to withdraw again. When visiting the herd, please note that guard dogs are on duty. There are a few important rules of behaviour that we will observe and that Daniel will be happy to explain to you on the way to the Jura.
The hike takes about 2 hours on uneven terrain.
We will only find out where the flock of sheep is at short notice. We will therefore announce the meeting point at short notice. (via email) We will meet in the morning at the SBB railway station and will be back in the evening.
Take with you: Snacks for in between, weather-appropriate clothing and good shoes. Lunch (it is not clear whether we will be able to make a fire; it is best to prepare for both).
Registration:
Please register bindingly, as there are only a limited number of places and we will buy a collective ticket. Please let us know if you have a GA or Half-Fare travelcard by Friday evening, 30 January. We look forward to seeing you, Sarkis, Sarah and Daniel
